Frequently asked questions

Careers at Virgin Active

These are some of the questions that we often get asked about jobs at Virgin Active Health Clubs.

Q: How do I become a Fitness Professional
(Fit Pro)?
A:
There are three types of qualifications which will enable you to become a Fitness Professional.

1) NVQs – National Vocational Qualifications whereby National Occupational Standards (NOS) are assessed in the workplace. This is the preferred qualifications of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).

2) VRQs – Vocationally Related Qualifications, accredited and funded by the government through Awarding Bodies. Based on the NOS with practical assessment and often work experience.

3) Industry Awards – other awards which the industry has approved as meeting the standard to give entry to REPs, sometimes from employers or universities.

Courses are available from a range of providers including private training providers, colleges and universities. They vary from distance learning courses to full-time college or university courses.

Q: Do you train people with no qualifications to become Personal Trainers?
A: No, but we do offer training aimed at enhancing the skills of already qualified staff. The minimum qualification for a position as a Fit Pro with Virgin Active is REPs Level 2 or equivalent (see answers to question 1). To apply for a Personal Trainer position, you will need a Level 3 and at least one year's experience as a Personal Trainer.

Q: Do you employ people whilst they are studying to be a Fit Pro?
A: Nope. But once you've completed your studies, we would love to hear from you if you have the right qualifications (REP Level 2 or equivalent) and even if you have very little or no experience.

Q: I want to work outside  the UK; does Virgin Active operate in any other countries?
A: We currently have clubs in Europe and South Africa. If you want to work for Virgin Active in these countries, follow the link on our homepage to the relevant Virgin Active website.

Q: How do I become a Lifeguard?
A:
To work as a lifeguard, you need a UK RLSS NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification). This is a 5-day course and is recognised nationally.
