classes to get you moving
functional training, circuit training, calisthenics & resistance
what is functional training?
How you naturally move can be mimicked in your gym routine to improve your fitness.
Functional training includes squats, lunges and overhead presses, all of which are exaggerated movements you do every day. Think sitting down, stepping over something or reaching for a shelf.
Calisthenics and resistance training are two styles of functional fitness and both can help achieve muscle gain and improve cardio fitness.
what is circuit training?
Circuit training is a workout that involves quickly rotating through various exercises that target different parts of the body.
Also known as Bootcamp, this workout focuses on different muscle groups and is an effective exercise to get your heart rate up.
At Virgin Active we incorporate circuit training in our Strength and Conditioning and HIIT workout classes. Join a class at your local club and give it a try.
what is calisthenics?
A calisthenics workout is exercising using only your bodyweight. No free weights or machines are involved which creates more natural movements.
Rather than isolating certain parts of the body, with calisthenics you will work different muscle groups together, carry out repetition, balance and stabilise with far less risk of causing any muscle damage.
Master your bodyweight and take your physique, skills and strength to new levels.
what is resistance?
Resistance training is also known as weight training but the term refers to any form of exercise where you lift or pull against resistance. This could be using dumbells, a barbell, bodyweight, machines, kettlebells, powerbands or any other external resistance.
Traditional resistance training uses resistance to perform an exercise for a specific number of repetitions to improve muscular strength, size or endurance.
