Summer swim safety
Stay in the loop and join the Virgin Active mailing list
There’s nothing quite like a dip in the pool on a hot day. Whether you're enjoying a leisurely swim, playing games, or working out, swimming offers a versatile way to have fun and stay fit. With the Summer holidays finally here, many of you will be enjoying some family time around water, whether that’s a pool or beach. Here’s our guide to staying safe while swimming this summer holiday.
Get to know the pool
Before diving in, take a moment to check the pool area. Note the depth markings, the location of the pool’s safety equipment, and identify the shallow and deep ends. It’s also worth taking note of any pool side rules and adult to child ratios, as they are there to keep everyone safe. This graphic shows a few of our suggested ratios but you can read our full guide here.
Have fun in the sun
Swimming is a physical activity, and it’s easy to become dehydrated without realising it. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after swimming to stay hydrated. We all want that holiday glow but remember it's also important to apply sunscreen before swimming, as water can reflect ultraviolet (UV) rays, increasing your exposure. Use a sun cream with a high SPF and reapply regularly to protect your skin from sunburn.
Lifeguards have got your back
Lifeguards are trained professionals who are there to ensure everyone's safety. They can respond quickly to emergencies and enforce safety rules. Although they may tell you off for running on poolside or diving in, always respect and follow their instructions. Remember, lifeguards are there to help, so don’t hesitate to approach them if you have any concerns or questions.
Swimming Lessons
Whether you're looking to improve your swimming technique or your juniors, we offer a variety of swim lessons for all ages and skill levels. We take little ones from 3months+, and juniors aged 4+ can make a start on level 1-7 of our Learn to Swim Programme. In this national awards scheme, we’ll help your child build skills until they’re ready to join our Junior Squad sessions – they’ll even get the opportunity to swim in our Gala at the London Aquatic Centre. Don’t forget we also have family swim sessions which is a great activity for everyone to enjoy!
Aqua Classes
If you enjoy being in the water and are looking for a low-impact cardio workout, consider Aqua classes. They are designed to improve cardiovascular health, increase strength, and enhance flexibility, all while being gentle on the joints. Do not be put off by the stereotypes, Aqua classes are great fun for adults of all ages!
